Our Story

Our Founding Vision:

Key Milestones at Bethel (1988-2023)

1988

Foundation of Bethel AME Church with five parishioners.


1992

Formation of the Boston Ten-Point Coalition, with Bethel as a founding member.


1993

Launch of Generation Excel, the precursor to the Bethel Institute for Community Development.


2002

Creation of My Sister’s Keeper for humanitarian efforts in Sudan.


2009

Growth to a 550-member congregation, moving to our current campus.


2014

Start of the Math & Science Scholars and Mediation & Wellness Programs.


2015

Introduction of the Planning Ahead Project to facilitate end-of-life discussions.


2017

Adoption of live streaming for worship services.


2018

Designation of Bethel as a sanctuary church for migrants.


2020

Distribution of nearly 1,000 meals during the pandemic's peak weeks.


2023

Digital worship services achieving nearly 25,000 views from 46 countries.
