Gloria White Hammond

Senior Leader

Reverend Gloria E. White-Hammond, M.D., is a true inspiration and leader in her community. She serves as Co-Pastor of Bethel AME Church in Boston, Massachusetts, alongside her husband, Reverend Ray A. Hammond, MD, and is the Swartz Resident Practitioner in Ministry Studies at Harvard Divinity School.

Dr. White-Hammond's career has been marked by a deep commitment to service and a passion for social justice. She served as a pediatrician at the South End Community Health Center from 1981-2008 and has since gone on to make an even greater impact in her community through her work with My Sister's Keeper, a humanitarian and human rights organization that champions social justice for women and girls in conflict zones.

Dr. White-Hammond's innovative ministries at Bethel include Shatter the Silence, which addresses sexual victimization of women and men in predominantly African American communities, and Planning Ahead, which encourages church members to begin conversations and complete their advance directives regarding their wishes for end-of-life care.

In 2015, Dr. White-Hammond was appointed Swartz Resident Practitioner in Ministry Studies at Harvard Divinity School, where she has developed learning opportunities for students to explore the intersection of the practice of medicine, spiritual care, and public health. She also co-directs the Harvard Medical School and HDS course, "Spirituality and Healing in Medicine."

Dr. White-Hammond is a graduate of Boston University, Tufts University School of Medicine, and Harvard Divinity School. She is a recipient of numerous honorary degrees and community service awards, and is a trustee emeritus of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Board of Trustees, a member of the BWH Executive Advisory Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, a trustee emeritus of Tufts University, a trustee of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, a member of the City of Boston's COVID-19 Health Inequities Task Force, and a member of the board of directors of the Roxbury Presbyterian Church Social Impact Center.

Dr. White-Hammond's compassion and commitment to her community are an inspiration to all who know her, and her tireless work on behalf of those in need is a testament to her unwavering dedication to justice, equity, and compassion. She is a true leader and visionary, and her contributions to her community and to the world at large are immeasurable.
